BASIC EQUIPMENT

Each mountain requires a different inventory of personal and team equipment to safely execute an expedition. More difficult or isolated mountains generally require more careful planning and logistical preparation. S2 expeditions are thoughtfully prepared with members usually months in advance of a scheduled climb. S2 members are also required to complete a “gear shakedown” before departure to assure all necessary personal and team equipment is available and serviceable.

Having the wrong or defective equipment is a problem that can be avoided with careful planning. Well in advance of an expedition departure date, S2 leaders publish a personal gear list for members to use in assembling their “kit.” When departure day arrives, members have the benefit of knowing they have the appropriate equipment for their safety. S2 leaders are also available to consult on the most appropriate equipment for a particular mountain.

The gear list provided below identifies basic personal equipment necessary for mountaineers at the beginning level on a weekend excursion to a peak below 15,000 ft. Note that personal equipment is separate from team equipment (i.e. tents, burners, etc.).
